I could kick myself for leaving my phone in Nora’s apartment.

It’d been an simple mistake. I’d put it down when I went in to check on her. Then I’d been so distracted by everything that I hadn’t thought about it.

From there I’d been worried about meeting the EMTs, and by the time I locked the door to her apartment with my phone and the spare key I’d been using to get in there on the other side of the door it was too late.

Heck, I hadn’t even realized I’d left my phone back at her place until I got to the hospital and realized it wasn’t there in my back pocket where it usually was.

“Listen, I don’t have a way to get ahold of her right now,” I said. “She was taken here by an ambulance, they just dropped her off, and…”

“I’m sorry, but if you didn’t come in with the ambulance and you’re not family or a spouse then we can’t let you back there right now,” the bored sounding nurse said.

It was a little odd talking to her. She wore a mask and a pair of glasses that looked like they were more suited to woodworking than working in a medical setting, and she was behind a big clear plexiglass wall that was obviously meant to keep any particulates from getting to the other side of the desk.

“What if I go get one of the EMTs who was out there?” I asked. “I mean come on. It’s not like it’s the end of the world if you let me in.”

“I’m afraid that doesn’t matter,” she said. “You wouldn’t be able to find them anyway. You can have a seat and wait for your friend to get in touch with you.”

I wanted to growl and start throwing things around. I’d tried explaining that there was no way for my friend to get in touch with me again and again, but clearly that meant nothing to this woman.

“Okay, so clearly we’re having a breakdown of communications here,” I said through gritted teeth.

I was trying very hard to sound polite through those gritted teeth. Polite would get me everywhere, and coming across like a bitch wouldn’t do anything.

It was hard though. Especially when the lady gave me a look that said she knew she was holding all the cards.

“I’ve explained this before. I have no way of getting ahold of my friend because while I was busy making sure she was still alive and talking with the nice EMTs who came to her apartment to keep her alive I left my phone in her apartment that I now have no way of getting into,” I said.

This clearly wasn’t working. No, the lady just hit me with another flat stare that said she’d seen it all and didn’t give a fuck considering we were currently going through one of the plagues of Egypt.

“Sorry about your trouble,” she finally said after considering it for a moment. Her face even split into a smile that looked unnatural on that frog face.
